TD Bank says it will keep an ATM machine in place after its long-time Marathon branch closes its doors this summer.
A spokeswoman for TD Bank Group said this week the bank is in the process of finding a Marathon location for an ATM, but didn’t say where it will be located.
TD currently maintains two ATM machines at its branch location at Market Fresh mall.
When TD closes the branch on Aug. 24, the town will be down to one bank — Scotiabank.
“After a careful review, we made the difficult decision to close our branch in Marathon based on a number of factors, including a decline in customer traffic and transactions,” TD spokeswoman Carly Libman said in an email.
Marathon Mayor Rick Dumas said the municipality, which does its banking with TD, said the town will stay with TD for the time being.
“They said (the branch closure) is a business decision, so there’s not much we can do about that,” Dumas said Friday. “We’ll continue to work with TD and monitor the situation.”
A spokeswoman for Scotiabank said there are “no plans” to make changes regarding its outlet at Marathon Centre Mall.
“I can’t see them leaving, with TD closing,” Dumas remarked.
Libman said TD plans to hold a public information meeting about the closure of its Marathon branch in April.
“We are reaching out to inform customers of this change to help make the transition easier, and we are actively working with (branch) employees to identify as many alternative roles as possible,” she said.
TD’s Marathon branch has six employees.
“Customers can access their accounts through mobile, phone and Internet banking options, and at any branch location,” Libman added.
TD has three branches in Thunder Bay. Asked about the future of those branches, Libman said:
“We do not have any news to share beyond the changes to our branch in Marathon.”
