School soccer clubs get to work

Chapples Park in Thunder Bay hosted a variety of exhibition games between Lakehead University, Confederation College and the visiting Canadian Mennonite University Blazers from Winnipeg at the Thunderhawks Invitational over the weekend.
On the women’s side, LU won the battle of the local schools by a 4-3 score. Andrea Pepe, Kayleigh Grant, Becca Valentine and Bailey Markham scored. Markham continued her hot streak with a four-goal performance in a 5-1 win over CMU.
Christiana Samai scored twice as Confederation blanked the Winnipeg school 6-0.
In men’s action, the Thunderwolves edged Confederation 2-1 with goals from Juan Vargas and Justin Peters. Dom Commisso replied for the Thunderhawks. However both local squads fell to the visiting team from Winnipeg.
Other games saw local men’s team Rainbow Realty Raiders win all three of their exhibition matches, including a 7-5 victory over the Blazers powered by Jon Potvin’s hat trick. Adam Augruso scored twice in a 3-1 win over the college and he bagged two more in a 4-3 result over Lakehead.
The Thunder Bay Impact defeated CMU 4-0, followed by a 4-1 victory over Confederation. Renee Clarke and Alyssa Johnston each scored twice for the Impact in the latter game.
In the Premier Men’s Soccer League of Thunder Bay, the Raiders blanked the Fury 4-0 in the opening leg of the outdoor playoff final. The two sides meet again today for the second encounter.
Thunder Bay players Kelsey Tikka and Amanda Mithrush continue their successful start to the season as their Wilfrid Laurier squad defeated Waterloo 1-0 and Ontario Tech 4-1 over the weekend to remain undefeated.
PRO WATCH: Another week, another defeat for Toronto FC. The Reds fell 4-1 to New York Red Bulls in MLS action. Vancouver Whitecaps kept their playoff hopes alive with a 0-0 tie against Seattle.
European Champions League play returns this week with games scheduled for today and Wednesday. A couple of games to watch include Ajax versus Real Madrid and Manchester City against Borussia Dortmund.
In the Premier League top of the table Chelsea remain unbeaten after a 2-1 victory at Arsenal and Manchester United were upset 3-2 at home by Tottenham Hotspur. United look to get back on track this weekend when they visit Newcastle.
In Italy's Serie A, AC Milan tied 1-1 with Parma and Juventus crushed Roma 4-1.
Meanwhile, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo struck for a hat-trick as Real Madrid thumped Deportivo La Coruna 5-1 in Spain, while Barcelona pulled out a late 3-2 victory at Sevilla on Saturday.
