Thunder Bay’s Krista McCarville opened the Ontario Scotties women’s curling championship with a 9-3 loss to defending champion Tracy Horgan in Draw 1 on Monday night in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Horgan and her Sudbury crew jumped on McCarville early with a pair of points in the first end and a steal of one in the second end. McCarville, a four-time Ontario champion, responded with one in the next end only to see Horgan post a triple in the fourth end for a commanding 6-1 lead.
Today McCarville (0-1) will face Toronto’s Cathy Auld (1-0) and fellow Thunder Bay skip Marlo Dahl.
Dahl fell in her opener on Monday, 5-4 to Jacqueline Harrison of Brantford.
Harrison scored one in the ninth and stole the winning point in the 10th to upend Dahl.
Other first draw winners were Ottawa’s Rachel Homan, Auld and Coldwater’s Sherry Middaugh.
