Man not in church to pray: police

Members of Thunder Bay churches are being warned about a man suspected of defrauding people of money over the last few months.
Police say the suspect has been attending various churches in the city and befriending parishioners.
The man will tell them stories that pull on their heartstrings, police said, and convinces the parishioners to give him access to their bank accounts.
The man then takes money from the accounts. In one case, a parishioner was defrauded of $2,000, police said.
Const. Julie Tilbury said police had two official reports as of Friday, but the investigation has officers believing the man has actually defrauded “a number” of residents, most of whom have not reported it.
“We’re just trying to find out what the scope of this really is,” she said.
The suspect is described as Caucasian and approximately 55 years old. He is about six-foot-two in height, with a medium build and graying hair.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 684-1200, or Crime Stoppers at 623-8477.
