Chill youth strike again in Winnipeg

A road trip to Manitoba this past weekend provided the Thunder Bay Chill youth teams with a 5-0 record in Winnipeg youth soccer league action.
The Junior Reserves took a maximum nine points from their three games, starting with Nick Chiapetta scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over FC Northwest.
Evan Sawula then bagged a hat trick as the Chill blanked Phoenix 5-0. Then Sawula and Kieran Ezzard were both on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win over WFC Rangers.
The Chill Selects also came home with max points, winning both of their league matches. Jacob Anttonen, Anthony Tassone, Ben Melchiorre and Josh Lloyd were all on target in a 4-1 victory over Phoenix.
Tassone followed up by scoring twice more as the boy’s defeated WSEU 4-2.
Meanwhile, the Thunder Bay women’s soccer league is winding down, with playoffs slated to begin Thursday. Mr.Lube claimed the Gold division title and wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 5-1 victory over the Chill under-14 girls, with Abbey Nedgial netting a pair of goals for the victors. Other games saw Jessy Kantola score twice as Spartans edged the Lakehead Express Under-14s 3-2 and Kelly Jo Gillis grabbed a hat trick as Tigers downed Ice 8-1.
The Chill recently held their annual dinner and awards evening. Congratulations to all the youth players who took home MVP honours for their respective team: Hannah Melchiorre, Cooper Pytyck, Alex Pike, Anthony Valente, Anna McLean, Paul Ochnicki and Ayden Meilleur.
Most improved players were also recognized and selected for this award were Jazmyn Tracz, Sam Keene, Kyra Tassone, Camryn Sorel, Sebastian Paradis, Marcus Roy, Julianna Servelio and Kevin Bai.

Robin Van Persie carried on from where he left off last season scoring two cracking goals as last year’s champions, Manchester United, kicked off the new campaign with a 4-1 win at Swansea. Chelsea had a comfortable 2-0 victory over league new boys Hull City, but Arsenal were upset 3-1 at home to Aston Villa. This week’s marquee matchup will see United host Chelsea.
Elsewhere Barcelona looked in great form as they thumped Levante 7-0 while rivals Real Madrid had to come from behind to edge Real Betis 2-1.
A big win for Bournemouth in the Championship, defeating last term’s FA Cup winners Wigan 1-0.
In Italy, Carlos Tevez was amongst the goals as Juventus blanked Lazio 4-0.
UEFA Champions League qualification scheduled for midweek includes Arsenal versus Fenerbahce and AC Milan taking on Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.
Huge games for all these clubs with progression and big money on the table for the victors.
Going back to last week, international games made the headlines. Brazil were upset 1-0 by Switzerland, Argentina edged Italy 2-1, Portugal drew 1-1 with Holland, and England came back to beat Rivals Scotland 3-2.
