Murray signs deal with Penguins
Thunder Bay’s Matt Murray agreed to a three-year entry level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
Murray, a 19-year-old goaltender, was drafted by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 2012 draft.
“I’m thrilled to sign my first pro contract with the Penguins' organization. It is a day I will never forget, and a dream come true,” Murray told the Soo Greyhounds in a press release from his Ontario Hockey League team.
The six-foot-four, 166-pound Murray recorded a career best mark in wins (26), goals-against average (3.67) and save percentage (.894) with the Greyhounds last season. He has a 47-49-8 record in the OHL.
Penguins executive vice-president and general manager Ray Shero made the announcement on Wednesday morning.
Murray is currently in London, Ont., where the Penguins will take part in a three-game rookie tournament with games versus Ottawa, Toronto and Chicago.
The tournament begins today.
