North Stars shoot for 5th win
The Thunder Bay North Stars will attempt to keep their hot start to the Superior International Junior Hockey League season alive tonight.
Thunder Bay (4-0-0) visit the Fort Frances Lakers at Ice for Kids Arena in a battle of the junior A loop’s top teams. The Lakers are 4-1-1.
The North Stars, who last beat the Dryden Ice Dogs on Friday, improved to No. 5 in the Canadian junior A rankings released on Monday.
Brandon Wolframe is off to a hot start with the North Stars, scoring three goals and dishing out five assists in four games.
Thunder Bay will travel to Ear Falls, Ont., to face the expansion English River Miners before opening at Fort William Gardens one week from today against the Ice Dogs.
LU enters regular season without a win
The Lakehead Thunderwolves fell victim to a barrage of third-period goals en route to a road loss in Duluth on Monday.
Fort Frances native Joe Basaraba scored the first of four goals in a five-minute span to open the final frame as the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs defeated Thunder Bay’s Thunderwolves 7-1 in non-conference hockey.
Jake Carrick scored the only goal for the Thunderwolves (0-3-0), who open the OUA regular season against the Royal Military College Paladins on Friday at Fort William Gardens.
Dominic Toninato, with two, Austin Farley, Carson Soucy, Justin Crandall and Kyle Osterberg also scored for the Bulldogs.
Thunder Bay player heads overseas
A member of the Lakehead Express rep soccer team is heading to England for some elite training.
Thunder Bay’s Nancy George, 13, will train and play with the West Ham United Academy in London in April, the Express announced on Monday. She was one of a few from a group of 300 at a summer tryout to earn the spot.
“(George) has exceptional technical skill and drive that is unsurpassed for her young age,” Express technical director Rob Pasqualino said in a release. “To be coached by the calibre of coaches that the West Ham United Club offers is the opportunity of a lifetime.”
George plays for the Express’ under-15 squad.
