Frank Avella of the St. Ignatius Falcons takes to the air while going for a lay-up as St. Patrick Saints Tanner Steudle and Brandon Sirignano defend during Thunder Bay high school varsity boys basketball action Thursday afternoon.
The host Saints clipped the Falcons 62-61 to improve to 4-1 — just a game behind league-leading Churchill Trojans (6-1). Mohammad Syed scored 23 points to lead the Trojans past the Hammarskjold Vikings 103-32. Justin Fui added 19 and Brayden Halvorsen poured in 12 points for Churchill.
Thursday’s other varsity game saw Westgate blow out Superior Collegiate 66-28.
In junior action, the Tigers remained undefeated at 5-0 thanks to a 61-53 victory over St. Ignatius.
High school hoops action spills over to the weekend as the Falcons host their annual Invitational today and Saturday. Games will be played in the St. Ignatius, Superior Collegiate and St. Patrick gyms.
