Thunder Bay’s Trevor Bonot rink secured the final available berth to the Northern Ontario men’s curling championship on Sunday.
Bonot scored two in the 10th end to defeat Sudbury Patrick Gelinas 6-5 in the East qualifier held in Timmins. The McIntyre club in Timmins will also host the provincial championship, Feb. 5-9 — the final step before the Tim Hortons Brier.
Bonot and his team of Al Macsemchuk, Chris Briand and Tim Jewett had dropped from the A side final this weekend, losing to 7-4 Dan Lemieux of Sault Ste. Marie on Satuday. Bonot then lost 8-1 to Sudbury’s Rob Gordon on Sunday morning before finally breaking through in the final draw.
Five of the eight skips at the provincials — Jeff Currie, Brian Adams, Dylan Johnston, Bryan Burgess and Bonot — are from Thunder Bay. Sudbury’s Mike Jakubo, Lemieux and Gordon round out the field.
Defending Northern Ontario and Canadian champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie will not be competing. Jacobs will represent Canada at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
