Forest fire season kicks off today
Today is the start of the 2014 forest fire season.
And, no, it’s not an April Fool’s joke.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is gearing up for this year’s fire season with similar resources committed to the effort last year.
Fire information officer Deb MacLean said Monday that she expects “the fire season start will be a quiet one, with extensive snow cover remaining across the region.”
“(Firefighting) resources are going to be status quo,” with 101 four-person fire crews stationed in the Northwest region, said MacLean, noting that the timing for hiring crews will depend on the weather.
“(The amount of snow on the ground) will affect the hiring — as far as the timing of crews coming online.”
