City players to make bid for Staal Open
A final qualifier for the Staal Foundation Open PGA Tour Canada golf tournament will be held on Monday.
Forty-six players, including 13 from Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, will golf one round at Fort William Country Club with the top 10 scores advance to the pro event beginning on Thursday.
Among the local contingent are former district amateur champions Barry Caland, Evan Littlefield and Rob Atatise. Littlefield and Atatise played in the Ontario men’s amateur championship in Toronto this week. Littlefield finished 56th while Atatise missed the cut.
Bill Shewchuk, Steve Melnik, Nathan Breukelman and Jamie Biscardi are the other Thunder Bay golfers looking for a spot. Other notables competing, according to a Thunder Bay District Golf Association press release, are Darcy Donaldson of Marathon and Fort Frances’ Scott Basaraba. The rest of the field will be made up of 33 pros from across North America.
