Ruling impacts claim

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Thanks for publishing a story on our press release in regard to the Supreme Court decision on the Tsilhqot’in aboriginal title land claim (Pic River Encouraged by Court Decision — CJ July 4).
I would like to bring to the attention of all levels of governments and to industries involved in the extraction of resources from our ancestral lands the advice of the Supreme Court: “Governments and individuals proposing to use or exploit land, whether before or after a declaration of aboriginal title, can avoid a charge of infringement or failure to adequately consult by obtaining the consent of the interested aboriginal group.”
Pic River has an aboriginal title claim before the courts. The recent ruling and the advice of the Supreme Court changes the manner in which governments and industries must now consult and deal with Pic River First Nation.
