Preparing to party

Shelter House development officer Amber Prairie, left, and executive director Michelle Jordan unveil details of a new fundraiser for the emergency shelter’s S.O.S. program on Wednesday.

Shelter House is hoping to raise money for its “vital” Street Outreach Services program with a party this summer.

The emergency shelter will be hosting its S.O.S. Block Party on July 13 from noon to 4 p.m. George Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for the family-friendly event.

The S.O.S. program runs every day from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., providing transportation for people on the streets to either the hospital or shelter and also provides them with food, water, blankets and other essential items.

“It’s a very underfunded program,” said Michelle Jordan, executive director of Shelter House Thunder Bay, noting they do get some funding, but not the full amount required to run the program.
