Day at the course

A golfer in Thunder Bay takes a swing at Chapples Golf Course on Wednesday. The city-run course is celebrating its 70th anniversary on July 16.

More than 70 years ago, Clement E. Chapple had a vision for what is now Chapples Park.

Although he died before work got underway, the prominent Fort William businessman, who also owned the Chapples department store and later became a city councillor, donated $5,000 a year for five years to start the construction of Chapples Golf Course.

The city matched his $25,000 contribution and a nine-hole course was originally constructed.

“I think it’s important to understand how it first started, knowing how in the future we are still expanding it,” said Pat Berezowski, supervisor of golf operations for the City of Thunder Bay.
