The Ontario government is calling on more municipalities to help it house thousands of people forced to flee worsening forest fires in the province’s remote north, as well as prepare for a possible “large-scale evacuation.”

“There is an urgent need for host communities to provide a safe haven for evacuees during this difficult time,” a spokesman for Ontario’s Solicitor-General office said Tuesday.

“The government is reaching out to mayors across the province to ask that their communities host evacuees,” the spokesman added.
