Definitely Superior Art Gallery is on the move. With the pending sale of the former Eaton’s building in the downtown north core, the gallery and other arts groups within the building have been served eviction notices.
Executive artistic director David Karasiewicz said they heard rumours the building was being sold last spring and then it was confirmed late last year with eviction notices being delivered in December.
The gallery, which has spent the last 20 years in the basement of the former department store, is in the final stages of securing a new location, which Karasiewicz said is on the periphery of the north side downtown and just a six-minute walk from their current location.
He said their location for the past two decades was a large space that the gallery progressively grew through.
Karasiewicz added he hopes the gallery can see the same evolution in their new location, which he didn’t want to disclose until the details are finalized.
U-Haul is reported to be the prospective buyer of the Eaton’s building and a company spokesperson said the property is listed as a potential acquisition.
