Elevating highways 11 and 17 to Class 1 status would ensure a higher level of snow plowing and other winter-road maintenance, says Ontario’s NDP.

The private member’s bill put forward Wednesday by MPP Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk-James Bay) would require the province to apply the same level of maintenance as it does to its 400-series highways in southern Ontario.

That would mean that snow would have to be cleared from the North’s two major roadways within eight hours after a storm.
