Efforts by 76 Grade 9 students at St. Patrick High School have helped to keep 305 kilograms of batteries out of the landfill.
For the second year in a row, Grade 9 teacher Maggie Cummins challenged her three science classes in Thunder Bay to collect as many batteries in the community as they could to fill her pickup truck and take them to be recycled.
“Some students did go around knocking door to door to see if they had any batteries, some brought in from their parents’ work,” said Natasha Hebert, a student who took part in the challenge. “It was fun to do and see how many batteries we could find and collect, the amount absolutely amazed me, it was incredible how many batteries could have ended up in our landfill.”
