It is with great sadness that the family of Marie Catherine Tracz (nee Cooshek) announces her passing on August 9, 2011 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. With her loving family at her bedside, she slipped peacefully away after a short illness at the age of 94. Born July 3, 1917 in Petrie, Ontario, she was educated in Fort William. In 1935 she met and married the late Joseph Tracz (photographer). After raising and educating her four children, she proudly attained her RNA certificate and worked full time at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, eventually retiring after 25 years. She took great pleasure and pride working with the young people at the hospital, many of them remembering her years after she retired. Maries dearest love was her family, taking great delight in her many grandchildren and great- grandchildren, and always passing off a coin in their hand for being nice. With friends from the First Church United, she joined in helping at the Shelter House kitchen and many times she was celebrated for being the oldest and longest attending volunteer. Her special talent was to butter and build bread pyramids which were always a challenge to knock down during dinner. Mother was a passionate lover of dogs, her dearest and favourite being Marty. He was not only her companion but also her ears. Marie was a talented daily crossword puzzler and especially, enjoyed the challenge of the New York Times Premium Edition. She was an avid theme collector over the many years (mushrooms, wildfowl, especially ducks and loons) as well as knitting many grandma quilts. Marie was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Peter Cooshek (Vancouver, BC), husband Joseph, brother John Cooshek (Vancouver, BC), sister Anne McInnes (New Hazelton, BC) and son Michael (Thunder Bay, ON). She was a proud and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Marie is survived by her son Peter (Diane) of Thunder Bay, daughter Helena of Owen Sound (en route), son Joseph (Suzanne) of Ottawa (en route), daughter-in-law Michele of Thunder Bay, grandchildren Warren (Gwen) of Barrie, ON (en route), Allison Chambers (Dan) of Thunder Bay, John (Susan) of Ottawa (en route), Michael (Amy) of Thunder Bay, Natasha Shack (Jason) of Fort Frances, great-grandchildren Andrew and Megan Chambers of Thunder Bay, Milo and Petra of Ottawa, and Courtney of Barrie, ON, precious adopted grandchildren Jessica and Victoria, and very special niece Anne McInnes of Vancouver, BC. She had a family greater than those related to her. Cremation has taken place. At Maries request the memorial service will be private. Your sympathy may be expressed through memorial donations to the Shelter House, Thunder Bay Animal Shelter, or a charity of choice.
A life well lived is a legacy we were blessed to have you, Mom, in our lives for so long.
A tree will be planted in memory of Marie Tracz in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 10, 2012.
