It is with great sadness that the family of Pasquale Scalese, aged 83 years, announce his passing at Bethammi Nursing Home in the early morning of Friday, February 19, 2010. For several years Pasquale endured a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy but always maintained his dignity and his deep devotion and love for his family. Pasquale was born to Carmela and Costanzo Scalese on June 1, 1926 in Martirano Lombardo, Italy. Pasquale left Italy in search of opportunity for himself and his future family. This search took Pasquale to Switzerland in 1953 and from there to Canada in 1955, first in Saskatchewan and then to Port Arthur (Thunder Bay). In Port Arthur, Pasquale worked as a logger in the Abitibi bush camps. Pasquale returned to Italy to find the love of his life Maria, and they married in Italy in 1958. Pasquale travelled between Italy and Canada until Maria and their son Lindo finally joined him in Port Arthur in 1962. As his family grew Pasquale left the forest industry, eventually working for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool from which he retired from in 1991. Everyone who knew Pasquale described him as a hard worker, respectful and respected, a kind and giving gentleman who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Pasquale always provided guidance and support to his children in all of their pursuits. It was his immeasurable strength and love for his family that permitted Pasquale to sustain the entire day at Silvana and John's wedding this summer. We are truly grateful for the special memories we have of him on that day. Pasquale loved the outdoors and spent countless days hunting, walking outdoors and taking long drives exploring Northwestern Ontario with his family. In his later years, Pasquale took up camping with Maria and also travelled to other countries such as Mexico and Brazil. Pasquale spent much time in his garden and found great pleasure in sharing vegetables with friends and neighbours. Pasquale also took great pride in making wine, sopressata, capocollo and sausages. Pasquale's true kindness and loving nature were seen in his love for his grandchildren with whom he would laugh and play with for hours. Nonno will be deeply missed by his adoring grandchildren. Pasquale is deeply mourned as he leaves behind the joys of his life - his loving and truly devoted wife Maria of 51 years; son Lindo; son Mario and daughter-in-law Kim and grandchildren Natalie, Adam and Christian; daughter Gisella and son-in-law Michael Belcamino and grandchildren Alexander and Marco; daughter Silvana and son-in-law John Ianni. Pasquale also leaves behind numerous relatives in Canada and overseas. Pasquale was predeceased by a brother and a sister in infancy in Italy; daughter Rosa in infancy; his parents Carmela and Costanzo Scalese; parents-in-law Michele and Anna Marino in Italy and numerous other relatives. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Bethammi Nursing Home for the excellent care and compassion extended to Pasquale (Pappa). Funeral services celebrating Pasquale's life will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 leaving the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St at Algoma at 8:50 AM to St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. Entombment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum, St. Andrew's R.C. Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL with the Vigil offered at 7:00 PM. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Canada or to the St. Joseph's Foundation of Thunder Bay.
