ALVES Mr. Augusto Alves age 72 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday, February 15, 2009. Born in Almaceda, Portugal on June 21, 1937 Augusto emigrated to Canada as a young man in search of better life. Upon his arrival he worked for GICO Mines in Manitouwadge, ON then American Can in Marathon, ON, and Great Lakes Paper in Thunder Bay. Augusto was a passionate gardener who took great pride in his garden and fruit trees. When he wasn't working in his garden he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Augusto will be lovingly remembered by his sister Maria de Jesus of Portugal, three nephews: Jo Dias, Roger Dias (America) and Jose Dias of Thunder Bay, nieces: Albertina, Tereza and Celia of Portugal. Numerous other family members also survive in Portugal. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2009 when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass at 10:00 am in St. Andrew's R.C. Church, celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. Interment in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the chapel of the SARGENT & SON FUNERAL HOME, 21 N.COURT with Vigil Prayers beginning at 7:00 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial donations to the Northern Cancer Fund or St. Joseph's Foundation- Hospice Unit would be appreciated.
