Mr. Merrit Armitage age 79 years, passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday March 11, 2003 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital-P.A. Site following a brief illness. Born in Port Arthur on August 22, 1923, Merrit was a lifetime resident of the area. He married Catherine (Kay) Gurney February 23, 1948 and they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year. Merrit served in the Royal Canadian Navy during W.W. II, and following his time in the service he worked for Abitibi Pulp & Paper Woodlands Division for 47 years. He enjoyed spending time gardening, especially working in his greenhouse. However, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren was his greatest joy. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife Kay, son Miles (Lesley), daughters; Kathy (Brian) Purdy, Merrill (Lino) Demasi, and Diane (Glenn) Wickman. Eight grandchildren; Adam, Beth, Miles (Krista), Ian, Vincenzo, Lino, Danielle (Wayne) and Jeremy (Yvonne). Six great grandchildren; Nathan, Braiden, Kodey, Shiane, Kylene and Nikolaus. He is also survived by his brother Nelson, step-father Pat Wilson, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Merrit was predeceased by his parents, Agnes and Nelson, brother Cookie and brothers and sisters-in-law. Funeral Services will be held on Friday March 14, 2003 at 11:00 am in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home 21 N. Court Street with Archdeacon Mark S. Conliffe officiating. All services will conclude in the chapel. Visitation for friends will be Thursday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home.
