Axent, Alexander
Mr. Alexander (Alex) Axent, age 72 years, of Ravenwood Avenue, passed away at his residence on Saturday, March 3, 2001. Born and educated in Port Arthur, Alex was a long time employee of Thompson Newspapers; and, as a young man, he began employment with the News-Chronicle. He continued his career with the local newspaper in Brampton for the next twenty-five years, retiring in 1990, and then returned to Thunder Bay. Alex was an ardent fisherman, gardener; and especially enjoyed berry picking, and going to the casinos. He was always willing to help others, and Alex was recently awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Thunder Bay District Housing Authority for his outstanding contribution as a volunteer. Alex is survived by his daughter Karin (John) Saipovski of Hamilton (presently here); two grandsons Jonathon and Justin Axent-Saipovski; one sister Betty (Bill) Berklund of Thunder Bay. Also surviving is Evelyn Russo, his very special friend and companion; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Alex was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Dora; four sisters: Stella Axent, Mary Nada, Elsie Chapman, Pauline Siles; three brothers: William, John and Arthur. Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Interment will take place in the Family Plot at Riverside Cemetery at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Alex's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or to their charity of choice.
