Card, Olive Genevieve

Olive Genevieve Card - age 95, of P.R. Cook Apartments, passed away Wednesday, July 7, a
week after entering St. Joseph’s Hospital, Thunder Bay.
Born on December 13, 1914 in Chapleau Ont. to Benjamin Vezina and Bridget McKay, she
attended Chapleau High School and graduated as a stenographer. Over the years she worked for
several firms including Collins Store, Smith and Chapples Store, eventually retiring from the
position of secretary at Chapleau Public School.
Olive was always spirited and full of energy, enjoying many blessings in her life. She was very
devoted to her family and her faith. She was a consummate hostess, participated in many sports
and especially enjoyed following professional hockey and baseball in later years. She turned out
many fine knit and crochet projects for family members and was a doting aunt to many children.
She liked gardening, Bridge and baking and was known for her peach pies and oatmeal date
cookies, she eagerly looked forward to annual family camping trips and was president of the
CWL in Chapleau and served as president of the Senior’s Harmony Club in White River.
Olive took a keen interest in the lives of her friends and family and cultivated many life-long
friendships. She was fond of a good time, a good chat and a good cup of tea..
Resigned to the fact that she and Nick might not be blessed with a family, they started to build a
house on Devonshire Street, Chapleau, and before the foundation was completed, they welcomed
the news that their son William was on his way. As older parents they both hoped to see their
son to adulthood -- Olive attended all three of her grandchildren’s weddings.
Her husband Frederick A. Card (Nick) predeceased in 1985. Olive is the last sibling of her
beloved family, she is predeceased by sisters Minetta Bernier (Fred), Dorothy Morris (Gilbert),
Veda Cote (J.O.,Ovide), Sr. Vivian Vezina, Constance Baker (Charles), Audrey Vezina, and
brothers Herbert (Margeurite), Cecil, McKay (Marie), Donald (Florence), and Willard (Marie)
and Christopher Vezina.
Olive is survived by one son, William F. Card (Heather) of Kaministiquia, three grandchildren,
Olivia Gauthier (Bobby) of Thunder Bay, Christa St. Louis (Ronald) of White River, and David
Card (Mandy) of Thunder Bay. She is GG or great grandmother to Taryn, Beau, Gibson, Liam
and Olivia St. Louis, and Madeleine and Gyven Gauthier.
Fr. Edward Kennedy will say a celebration of her life Mass in the Chapel at St. Joseph’s
Heritage, Sat. July 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon to follow in the Georgian Room.
Cremation has taken place with interment later this summer in Chapleau.
Thanks to the wonderful support staff of St. Joseph’s Heritage, Olive who had Alzheimer’s, was
able to continue to live in her own apartment even after receiving cancer treatment last summer,
until she entered TBRHSC May 27. The family is also thankful for the compassionate care she
received at St. Joseph’s. Special thanks to Dr. P. Rao, Fr. Richard Kowalchuk and Mary Howell.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Day Program at the
Manor House.
