Grant, Leo
Mr. Leo Grant age 70, passed away peacefully at TBRH Port Arthur Site on Wednesday December 3, 2003. He was born March 31, 1933 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he received his early education and plumbing apprenticeship. His trade took him to Toronto, where he married Dona Maria Roberts in 1957 at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. In 1958, they moved to Fort William, where he was employed as Manager of Keenan Plumbing, then owned and operated Arthur's Plumbing and later Grant's Plumbing. Leo was a longtime member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union, Local 628, life member of the 3rd Degree of the Knights of Columbus Fort William Council 1447 and a 4th Degree member of Father Baxter General Assembly, where he spent a number of years as the Faithful Commander of the Colour Guard. His proudest accomplishment was his six sons, his daughter and his grandchildren. Leo loved to spend time in his garden, taking an evening cruise on his bike and chatting with his many friends over coffee. He was a devoted volunteer coordinator for countless Knights of Columbus spaghetti and lobster dinners and enjoyed hockey, baseball and time spent with the family. Leo is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dona Maria (nee Roberts), sons Allan (Wendy), Tom, Arthur, James, Andrew (Pamela) and Donald as well as his daughter Jo-Ann (Jyrki Elo). His grandchildren include Jason, David, Nikolas, Tyler, Doug, Kirsi, Markku, Amanda, Logan, Joseph, Emily, Peter and Sam. He is also survived by his sisters Margaret Reddy, Gertrude MacIntyre, Dorothea Purcell and Inez Grant, all of Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his parents Rose and Joseph Grant, brothers Joseph, Frank, Louis and Arthur and his sister Marjorie. A special thank you goes to the nurses and staff at Port Arthur General Hospital ICU for their kindness, compassion and skill. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003 when friends and family will gather for Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. David Gillen. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Vigil Services will be offered on Sunday, December 7, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Removal will be made from the Blake Funeral Chapel prior to service time on Sunday. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Leo Grant to the Shelter House or Birthright.A tree will be planted in memory of Leo Grant in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove.
