Hartviksen, Edmund Berg
Edmund Berg Hartviksen, aged 87 years, passed away peacefully in hospital on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Ed was born on March 5, 1923 and was a life long resident of Thunder Bay. Ed started working at the Port Arthur Shipyards in 1940. He joined the Active Army R.C.E.M.C in 1942 and was stationed in Winnipeg during the war. In 1947 he joined Abitibi - Thunder Bay Division and remained there until his retirement in 1985. Ed was an avid skier and was part of a group of skiers who started Mount Baldy in the late 1930’s. He enjoyed curling and belonged to the Port Arthur Curling Club for over 50 years. He loved hunting, fishing and camping. He and Inga enjoyed many years camping and travelling across Canada in their motor home to visit their children and grandchildren. Ed loved to travel and over the years went on numerous cruises and trips; a special highlight was a trip to Norway in 1994 with cousins that took him back to his father and mother’s homeland. In recent years he enjoyed spending summers at the cottage at Grandview Beach. He was a lifelong member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, active on the Board of Trustees as well as serving as Treasurer. He also enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a member of Port Arthur Legion Branch 5. Ed will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife Marjorie and his four children, son Alfred (Orian), Okanagan Falls, BC, daughter Margit, Kitchener, ON, daughter Sara (Ralph Hughes), Garibaldi Highlands, BC, and daughter Julie (Gary Gaudry) Hubley, NS, grandchildren, Kristofor (Adrienne), Shelley (Kevin), Kristin (Robert), Andrew (Sonya), Benjamin, Rebecca and Mark and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Evan. Stepsons Rick Grimshaw (Heather) and Rod Grimshaw (Patricia) and their children and grandchildren. Sisters June George, Corunna, ON, Helena Nelson, San Ramone, California, Jeanette O’Hara, Mississauga, ON and brother Jim (Carolyn), Thunder Bay, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ed was predeceased by his first wife Inga in 1990 and second wife Alice in 2002, his brother, Alfred and sisters Haldis and Emily. Many thanks to all the caregivers at the T.B.R.H.S.C and St. Joseph’s Care Group and a very special thanks to Jane Safronyck for her extra special support and care of Uncle Ed. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11am, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, corner of River St. and Farrand St. with Rev. Matthew Diegel presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
