Johnson, Frederick Brian

A resident of Ottawa, ON, Frederick Brian Johnson passed away on March 15, 2007 at his winter residence in Lady Lake, Florida after a lengthy illness. Fred was born in Fort William, ON on September 10, 1944. He graduated from Hillcrest High School before attending Lakehead University. He graduated in 1968 with an Honours B. Sc. Degree (Chemistry), and accepted a position with Great Lakes Forest Products. At the same time, he pursued post graduate studies. Fred became fluent in three languages - English, French and Spanish. In 1973 he accepted a position with the Federal Government in Ottawa and worked there until he retired due to ill health. Fred was a worldwide expert in the field of Forestry Conservation and his influence continues to be felt in the many people he trained and mentored. He married Eileen Valley in 1968. His main interests were reading, music and gardening. Fred will be sadly missed by his wife Eileen and their son Paul Clifford Johnson. He is also survived by three brothers: Ted (Claire), Don (Sonja), and Gary (Gayle) Johnson; his sisters-in-law: Joyce (Gerry) Vander Wees and Marie Valley. Numerous nieces; nephews; and members of the Cheetham family also survive. Fred was predeceased by his mother Ivy Alice Cheetham; his stepfather Sydney Clifford Cheetham; and brother-in-law Albert Valley. A Memorial Service was held in Ottawa on June 2nd, 2007, and a Memorial Service will be held in Thunder Bay at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8th, 2007 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to the charity of your choice.
