Johnston, Donald Cairns

It is with great sadness the family of Donald Cairns Johnston announce his passing on Saturday, November 4, 2006 after a long illness. Donald was born in Englehart, Ontario on January 26, 1923. After serving with the RCAF, Donald married Bernice (Smith) in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 25, 1944. After starting his career with Air Canada in Halifax in 1944, he transferred to Thunder Bay in 1948 where he retired after 38 years with the company. Don lived his life to the fullest and was very active in our community. Some of his greatest passions lied in his time spent with the Lakehead Search & Rescue Unit as the Area Commander, the Thunder Bay Kennel & Training Club, the Thunder Bay Police Revolver Club and with the Coast Guard Auxiliary as both President and member of the board of directors. As well, Don was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church. Donald is survived by his loving and attentive wife of 62 years Bernice, sons James Douglas (Kim) and Allan, grandchildren Zoe-Lynn (Kevin), Andrea (Michael), Jessica (Troy), Sarah and Michelle; great grandchildren Jacob and Ronin. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his brother Ian, parents James Craig and Margaret Jean and brother Alec. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Donald Johnston will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Walsh Street. Cremation and interment to follow for family at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada or the Lakehead Search & Rescue Unit.
