Esther Juliana Johnston, age 97 years passed away peacefully at Grandview Lodge on Sunday, July 4, 2004. She was born May 8, 1907 in Port Arthur. She was predeceased by her parents Hemming and Ida Salminen, husband Robert on August 12, 1991, brother Veikko Salminen, sisters Sylvia Hill and Helvi Harju and grandson Ronald Merkley. She is survived by son William Johnston (Mary) of Windsor, daughter Lois Merkley (Grant), 4 grandchildren Kevin Merkley (Karen), Kathryn Kempton (Ralph), Edward Johnston (Kim), Wendy Johnston (James Vlcek), 6 great grandchildren Karilyn and Krystin Kempton, Grant and Christina Merkley, Tyler and Tessa Johnston, brother Edwin Salminen, sisters Lempi Backen and Violet Munson. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Cremation has taken place and a Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at Grandview Lodge, 200 Lillie Street.
