It is with great sadness that the family of Norman LaVoie announces his sudden passing on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Norm was born on August 6, 1942 in St. Thomas, ON to Lucille and Norman LaVoie. He grew up in St. Thomas with his parents and sister, Marie, and following the death of his father, with his mother and step-father, Truman Balsden, his brother, Doug, and later his brothers, Richard and Michael - a happily blended family. Following his graduation from the University of Windsor with a BA (Economics) 1965 and a Bachelor of Physical Education 1966, Norm married Patricia "Tish" Stewart and in 1968 their daughter, Jennifer, was born. He continued his education at the University of Alberta by completing an MA (Physical Education) 1969 and PhD (Exercise Physiology) 1972. That same year, Norm accepted a faculty position in the School of Physical Education and Athletics at Lakehead University where he had a very satisfying 30 year career. Tish passed away tragically in 2001 shortly before Norm's retirement. In 2003, he accepted a contract position at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON where he taught until 2005. In 2007, Norm married Bev Bicknell, with whom he shared his love for travel and camping and together they had wonderful adventures. Throughout his life Norm had many passions. He was well known for his tireless efforts in organizing sporting events, refereeing basketball games, and volunteering with community organizations. He took great pride in encouraging and guiding students in their academic and athletic pursuits. Most recently, Norm was a dedicated citizen member of the Waterfront Development Committee. Norm is survived by his wife Bev Bicknell, daughter Jennifer LaVoie (Terry Milani), granddaughter Jannessa LaVoie, step-son Steven Adams (Megan Lalonde), sister Marie Koprich (Steve), brothers Doug Balsden (Leah), Richard Balsden (Elaine), Michael Balsden (Arlene), sisters-in-law Eileen Stewart, BJ Baskin (Vic), Marjorie Diplock (Wayne Parks). Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. A celebration of Norm's life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 12:00 pm in the Tiberio Room at the Airlane Hotel. Donations may be made to the Dr. Norm and Tish LaVoie Bursary in care of Lakehead University or to a charity of your choice.
