Royden Melven Mattson of Thunder Bay died Sunday, November 17th at St. Josephs Hospice on his 88 birthday with his family by his side. Roy was born in Fort William, Ontario and raised in Pearson Township. Roy loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing and was a hunting guide in his younger years. He was a very talented musician and loved playing his many musical instruments, cooking for his family and friends and travelling to the cabin in Grand Marais. Roy worked as District Operator Instructor for the Department of Highways and retired after 35 years of service. He was a WWII veteran who served in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders Second Division. On June 6th, 2002 Roy was very proud and honoured to receive a metal from the Dutch Government for his service in the Liberation of Holland. Roy is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, sons Melvin (Elizabeth), Geordie (Maryann), and daughter Nora Lynn (Hans) Carlsson, stepsons Leslie Donek, Tex (Cindy) Donek, stepdaughter Joyce (Jack) Heiskari, grandchildren Mandi Matson, Nathan (Tara) Matson, Saralynn (Johan) Swardh, Jordee Matson, Jerry (Julie) Donek, Jaclyn (Troy) Berneking, Jeffrey (Joni) Heiskari, Jason, Brandon and Sherri Donek and 10 great grandchildren, brother Alfie (Mamie), sisters Millie (Rudy) Stajkowski and Helen (Wayne) Lankinen. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ivor, Harold, Leo and Ernest, and sisters Margret Aho, Greta Green, and Florence Campbell, and granddaughter Sheila Donek. Memorial services with be held on Thursday, November 21st at 11:00am at Calvary Lutheran Church. If friends so desire, donations to St. Joseph's Hospice or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Roy was a very gentle soul and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be missed by all.
