Murphy, Betty
Mrs. Betty Murphy (nee Hawkes), aged 74, resident of Castlegreen Co-operative, passed away peacefully June 12, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospice following a brave and lengthy battle with cancer.Betty was born September 19, 1931, in Port Arthur, Ontario. In 1950 she married Jim Murphy and they shared 55 wonderful years together.Betty worked at Chapples, Walkers, and was the Manager of Val's Card and Party Shop for many years.She was an avid gardener and every summer had a yard filled with beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables. In 1988 Betty and Jim moved to the Edmonton area to be closer to their son Jeff and his family, returning to Thunder Bay in 1998.Betty enjoyed living at Castlegreen Cooperative very much these last 7 years.She made many wonderful friends there and participated on the Kitchen, Canada Day, and Halloween Committees.She also played the part of Mrs. Claus at the 2002 and 2003 Castlegreen Children's Christmas Parties.Betty was predeceased by her parents Percy and Peggy Hawkes, and by her son Jeff, who was killed in a car accident in 2000 at the age of 45.Betty's main interests were her home and family.She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and lovingly followed their lives and accomplishments.She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend to many.She is survived by her beloved husband Jim; daughter Carolyn Matthews (Ian); daughter-in-law, Nancy Murphy; and eight grandchildren: Glory, Lucas, and Melody Jewitt; Isaac Matthews; Len (Leah), Jay, Christopher, and Warren Murphy. The family wishes to thank the many friends and neighbours who have provided support during this challenging time in way of visits, phone calls, meals/baking, flowers, cards, prayers, etc. These people are too numerous to list, but each of you know who you are and how you have so kindly contributed. Special thanks also goes out to Dr. Goertzen, the nurses and care team of St. Joseph's Hospice, Joanne Knudsen-Bailey of Bayshore Healthcare, and Reverend Peter Smyth and Reverend Nancy Ringham of St. Michael's and All Angels Church.You are all outstanding individuals and your selfless service and kindness will never be forgotten. A Memorial Service for Betty Murphy will be held Friday, June 17, 2005, at St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church, at 11:00 a.m.In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Joseph's Hospice Unit would be greatly appreciated.
