Murphy, John Walter
It is with great sadness that the Murphy family announces the unexpected loss of John Walter, loving husband and father, Jack, age 73, lifetime resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Arizona on January 17, 2003 with his wife of 47 years, Betty, at his side. Born on August 12, 1929, Jack was raised and educated in Fort William and attended Franklin StreetSchool and Vocational High School. He was employed by the City of Thunder Bay Telephone Department and retired in 1984 after 36 years of service. Jack joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Admiral Cradock at age 12 and was actively involved for 12 years. He was also a member for many years of the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment Militia Band where he played the trumpet. His love of music continued throughout his life. He greatly enjoyed playing the harmonica, guitar, keyboard and most recently, at age 71, had taken up the violin. Jack's greatest love was his family. In earlier years, summers were spent at Green Bay where Jack enjoyed the companionship of goodfriends and neighbours. After retirement, Betty and Jack traveled for many years before finding their second home in Arizona. Jack believed he had the best of both worlds with his summer home at Pike Lake and his winters with friends in Arizona. Jack was predeceased by his father Robert, parents-in-law John and Jean Glencross, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Arnold Bulger, sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Bob Tabor, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary and Bill Agnew and brother-in-law Bill Glencross. Also surviving are his aunt and uncle Violet and Bill Slater and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His memory will live on in all of us. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 27, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Anglican Church with Archdeacon Andrew Hoskin officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre would be greatly appreciated.Online condolences may be made at www.nwconx.net/~nwfa/
