NURMIMAKI Mrs. Irene (Irja) Nurmimaki, age 79 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in hospital on Sunday September 18, 2005. Born in Lapinjarvi, Finland, she came to Canada in 1951 and settled in the Lakehead. She met and married her husband John Nurmimaki on April 1, 1961 and together they shared 44 wonderful years together. Irene worked as a cook at Abitibi Woodlands Division for 36 years, where she made many friends. She loved her flowers and spending time with her husband at their cottage at Surprise Lake. Irene also enjoyed making petti-point crafts, getting together with her friends in the knitting club and making beautiful suppers and entertaining. Over the last 5 years Irene enjoyed many memorable trips to Florida each winter with her husband. Survived by her loving husband John at home, sister Aili Jaatinen, niece Arja Jaatinen, nephew Risto (Marjatta) Jaatinen and their son Patrick, niece Raija Salminen, nephew Raimo Salminen, sister-in-law Hilkka Salminen - all of Finland, and long-time friends Hilkka and Alfred Korpiaho and family, as well as many good friends in Thunder Bay, Finland and the USA. Predeceased by her parents Juho and Ida Salminen, brother-in-law Reino Jaatinen, 3 brothers Asser, Lauri and Antti. As per her wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Irene (Irja) Nurmimaki will be held on Thursday September 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in Hilldale Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor Jari Lahtinen. Interment of Ashes will take place at a later date in Finland. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Hilldale Lutheran Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
