Shewchuk, Kate

It is with great sorrow that the family of Mrs. Kate Shewchuk (Matheson) announces her passing on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at her home with family by her side. Kate was born in Port Arthur on December 13, 1920 and was raised on the family homestead in Harstone. She graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing as a registered nurse and after raising her family, she returned to school to upgrade nursing skills. Ma, as she was affectionately known, was deeply devoted to her family. Along with raising her seven children, Ma was the primary caregiver for her parents and her uncle in their later years. Her seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren filled her house and her heart. She always had time to make each one feel special, whether it was by playing cards, reading a book, or having a cup of tea. Ma will be solely missed by her children; Joanne (David St. Germain), Jim (Cathy), Patricia (Alan Vaillant), John, Peggy (Brian Hainrich), Willie (Gloria), Nancy (Rob McCluskey), her grandchildren; Nicole (Scott), Lee, Jay, Bill, Brett, Jeff, Amy, Ian, Todd, Beth (Jeff), Jen, Kate (Chad), Charlie (Natalie), Tom, Randy, Marci, Kim and her great grandchildren; Maddyson, Emmett, Owen, Nora, Jake, & Cash. Kate was predeceased by her husband, William, daughter-in-law Karen, parents Murdoch & Anna Matheson, siblings Angus, Peggy, John, and Robert & her faithful dog Saffy. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church (664 Red River Road).
