Friday, January 15, 2010

It is with deep sadness we announce that Mr. Robert Syroid, age 67 years, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Robert was born in Port Arthur on October 4, 1942. He began his lifelong passion, the restaurant business, working for his father and uncle at the T&M Grill on Simpson Street. Leveraging this experience he then opened the highly successful Mr. Streak restaurant on Arthur Street. His next venture proved to be the best, the introduction of Pizza Hut to Thunder Bay. At the height of Robert's success as a restaurant operator, he had 10 Pizza Huts in the Northwestern Ontario region. Robert was always eager for a successful business venture and after two years of calculating the perfect location, he opened Applebee's Neighbourhood Grill & Bar in 1997. The restaurants were his second home and the various people he met through his restaurant journey became his second family. Robert loved sports and played hockey as a defenseman for the Fort William Canadians. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending his Sunday afternoons watching NASCAR and cheering on Jeff Gordon. Robert's other favourite pastime was spending time with Brenda out at their camp at Pine Bay and vacationing at their favourite destination ˆ Las Vegas. Robert was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Mary Syroid, and in-laws, Lawrence and Janet Mann. He is survived by his wife, Brenda and two children Ryan and Robin. Also by his sister Jennie (Mike) and three nephews Gary (Debbie), Brian (Stephanie) and Andrew (Carolyn) all of Santa Barbara, California. Robert's family would like to thank the entire ICU and Oncology nursing team especially Kendra, Donovan, Wayne, Natalie and Carly. A very special thank you to Dr. Vergidis, Dr. Simpson and Dr. Ahmed. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northern Cancer Fund would be greatly appreciated. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James with Mr. Eric Long officiating. Interment will follow in Mountainview Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation ˆ Northern Cancer Fund.
