Pekka Tuhkanen, age 71 years, passed away in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital after a short illness, on Wednesday, April 20th , 2006. He was born in Siilinjarvi, Finland October 5th, 1934. Pekka came to Canada as a young man on April 13, 1960. He worked in various positions in the Woodlands Operations, and spent eighteen years cutting wood for Kimberly-Clark, before retiring for health reasons. He was a long time resident of Terrace Bay, before moving to Thunder Bay in 1990. Pekka loved people and socializing, also hunting and fishing with his Buddies. He was a member of the Finlandia Club and served several years as a board member. Presently, he served as Vice-President of the Friendship Club. Pekka is survived by his partner Anja; son Marco; grandson Joona in Finland; brother Esko (Sylvia), from Terrace Bay; two sisters: Eeva (Antero) and Katri, all of Finland; his favorite niece Kathie (Alan) and little Al, on their way to Thunder Bay. He also leaves behind two nieces: Pirkko (Jouni) and Riikka (Jani) in Finland. He was predeceased by his parents in Finland in 1995. Funeral Services for the late Pekka Tuhkanen will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25th, 2006 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, officiated by Rev. Jari Lahtinen of Hilldale Lutheran Church. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street.
