Turner, Frances Victoria (Hawkins)

Frances Victoria Turner age 93 of Linden Crt, formerly long time resident of Argyle St, passed away peacefully with family at her side in St Joseph's Hospital on May 29, 2009. Frances was born Aug 25, 1915 in Cork, Ireland to Walter and Mary Hawkins. When she was still a young child the family emigrated to Canada, settling in the Whitefish Lake area where they lived for several years before moving to Port Arthur. Frances attended St Andrew's School and graduated from Hillcrest High School. She enjoyed employment as a stenographer with the Ministry of Agriculture. Frances married Arthur Turner in 1940. They were happily married until his death in 1987. Her life revolved around her family and many good friends. Summers at Hawkeye Lake were the highlight of the year. Frances was a woman of letters, championing at scrabble and keeping her mind keen with crossword puzzles. She was an accomplished knitter, keeping her family warm until her fingers could no longer work the needles. Art and Fran enjoyed many excursions around North America, the British Isles and Eire with family and friends. Faith was very important to Frances. She was an active member of St Andrew's parish for over 80 years and president of the CWL 1965-67. Survived by sons: Brian (Sandra) and Roland (Judi) Turner; daughter Nancy (Don) Burton, granddaughters: Alison Murphy; Barbara (Richard) Hicks; Theresa Turner (Jerry Stewart); Jennifer (Jukka) Tervo; Becky Burton (Dave Olenik); Katie Burton (Brad Ducharme); Laura Burton (Jonathon Balabuck), grandson David Turner (Travis Kendrick), 12 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Frances E Turner; brother-in-law Alvin Skinner, and numerous other relatives in Canada and Ireland. Predeceased by her parents, husband Arthur Turner, brothers John Leo (Paddy) and Walter Maurice (Mossie) Hawkins, sister Cecilia Skinner, grandson John Turner and other relatives in Canada and Ireland. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 when family and friends will gather in St. Andrew's R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 1:30 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini concelebrated by Rev. Ciaran Donnelly. Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St Joseph's Care Group, the CNIB or charity of choice.
