(Re: ‘Find 4’ To Protect What Matters Most — letter, May 23)

DOUG Ford is creating a crisis for municipalities. The Ford government cut provincial transfers to municipalities midway through their fiscal year. Ford did so without warning.

The Ford Conservatives are downloading services and costs to municipalities.

Ford is forcing cities to look at raising taxes, cutting services, or some combination of the two, to keep up with his callous cuts.

Think about the services municipalities provide or help to fund: policing, fire, ambulances, public health, utilities, and refuse collection.

Municipal services make our day to day lives functional. When they are properly funded and are functioning well, we hardly notice them.

For this government, “finding efficiencies” is code for cuts, and cuts will harm our communities.

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning.

As a report this week by the Financial Accountability Officer (FAO) made clear, there are $6 billion more in service cuts to come by 2021-22, cuts that will hamper job creation and our economy.

Mr. Rickford and Mr. Ford believe that you deserve less. But as the FAO report showed, they also believe the wealthiest deserve more.

The FAO report showed that the Ford government gave a $308 million tax break to the wealthiest Ontarians. They spent $30 million on partisan ads to defend their Conservative buddies in Ottawa.

And they wasted $191 million meddling in Hydro One.

The fact is that Rickford and Ford are spending, just not on you.

You deserve better.

You deserve a government that invests in public services.
