Lake Superior High School’s Erik Speziale competes in the senior boys high jump on Wednesday at the Northwestern Ontario high school track and field championships at Fort William Stadium. Speziale edged St. Ignatius’ Lloyd Kargbo to deliver a victory for his Terrace Bay-based school. Speziale cleared 1.72 metres while Kargbo and third-place finisher Tyson Mayer of Hammarskjold couldn’t leap beyond the 1.69-metre mark. Kargbo did go on to win the senior boys long jump with a meet record measure of 6.22 metres. Other highlights included Hammarskjold’s Amy Stieh collecting her second meet record in as many days with a time of 25.41 seconds in the senior girls 200-metre race. Gavin Perkins (Hammarskjold) set a new mark in the senior boys javelin event. Other record-setters were Christiana Collins (St. Patrick, 200 junior girls), Tim Shaw (Westgate, 200 junior boys) and Annika John (Michipicoten, junior girls high jump). The two-day meet ended Wednesday with the Hammarskjold Vikings winning the overall points title with 869. St. Patrick was second at 539 and St. Ignatius was third with 326. St. Patrick claimed the girls team points crown, while the Vikings earned the boys championship. A total of 13 schools from Thunder Bay and the region took part in the event. Winners will move on to OFSAA championships next week in Guelph, Ont.
