That‘s about to change. Regional Cancer Care and the Linda Buchan Centre for Breast Screening and Assessment will be providing women with Breast Bags before they have surgery. The bags, hand-sewn by volunteers from Patchworks, contain pamphlets to help women understand follow-up care and how to prepare for their post-operative period. A news conference to introduce the bags was held Wednesday at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. This patient education tool came about after Jody Nesti, a breast cancer survivor, strongly advocated, on behalf of the Thunder Bay Breast Cancer Support Group, for the creation of the bags. Funding for the bags came from the Linda Buchan Center, whose services are supported by the Northern Cancer Fund. Nesti said the information is essential. “When they leave (the hospital after surgery) they don‘t know what the next step is,” she said. “There are a lot of holes in the system but we have, with this bag, remedied some of those holes.” Nesti said doctors may provide some information for patients, but after surgery they are not in the right mindframe to absorb it. Lori Della Vedova, manager of the cancer screening program, said when patients are diagnosed with breast cancer, they‘re overwhelmed. “Some patients don‘t know where to get information,” she said. Now, they will be receiving it all at once. Top of Page |
