In favour — green energy is the way to go
No way, not in our backyard
Well, it might spur much needed economic development

TORONTO - Books about civil war and the Great Depression have won Canadian Children’s Literature Awards.

"The Bite of the Mango," written by Mariatu Kamara with Susan McClelland, won the $10,000 Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non-fiction.

The book is a "powerful and touching" true story of a young girl who survives Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war, said the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, which administers the awards.

John Ibbitson’s "The Landing" won the $5,000 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People.

"This exquisitely written novel clearly illustrates the impact of the Great Depression," the centre said.

Ibbitson’s book won the Governor General’s Award for children’s literature in 2008.

"Mattland," written by Hazel Hutchins and Gail Herbert and illustrated by Dusan Petricic, won the $20,000 Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award.

It was described as "a compelling story of the transformative power of the imagination."
