The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has found a new medical officer of health.

Dr. Henry Kurban is to start his tenure Jan. 2. And while he‘s technically beginning as acting medical officer of health, the health unit hopes to take the word “acting” off his door very soon afterward, said acting CEO Doug Heath said Wednesday.

“Officially, he can only be the acting,” Heath said. “Because he‘s trained in the U.S., he has to do a year of practice in Ontario before the College of Physicians and Surgeons will grant him a licence.

“The minister of Health can then approve his appointment as the (medical officer of health),” he said. “He‘s our MOH, but it‘ll take a year.”

Kurban is completing his preventive medicine residency training and board certification at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, says a news release. He received his initial medical training at the University of Western Ontario‘s faculty of medicine, and also holds a masters degree in public health from Johns Hopkins and an MBA from McGill University in Montreal.

“His academic success is outstanding,” Heath said. “His communications skills and his demeanor and his professionalism is all top-notch.

“He is coming highly regarded.”

Heath said Kurban will be dealing with the province and community on the health unit‘s behalf.

Currently, the health unit has an acting MOH, but since that‘s a temporary position, there‘s no real permanency. Kurban will be able to focus on building relationships, developing programs and thinking longer-term, Heath said.

The search for the new MOH started during the winter, Heath said.

Kurban was not available for comment Wednesday.
