A Thunder Bay man charged in the January death of the woman he was living with is headed for a trial.

Following a three-day preliminary hearing earlier this week, Ontario Court Justice Dino Di Giuseppe committed Michael Edward Shingabis‘s case to Superior Court.

Shingabis, 32, faces charges stemming from the discovery of the body of Sybil Dawn Stoney at her Bethune Street apartment earlier this year.

Acting on a call from concerned family members, Thunder Bay Police officers went to the home that the 37-year-old Stoney shared with Shingabis. Her body was found inside the apartment shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 22.

Early the next morning, Shingabis called police and he was taken into custody without incident.

Shingabis faces two charges related to Stoney‘s death: second-degree murder and indecently interfering with human remains.

Thunder Bay Police investigators haven‘t revealed the cause of death, but the information sworn out against Shingabis states the offence dates occurring between Jan. 3 and 22.

A preliminary inquiry is a hearing before an Ontario Court judge, who must decide if the evidence presented by the Crown is sufficient for a properly instructed jury to return a guilty verdict.

Others accused in homicide cases also recently returned to court. They include:

• Christopher William Gregorchuk, 29, and Eric Thomas Lindstrom, 38. They‘re charged in the death of Richard Ouimet, whose body was discovered March 21 off Highway 527, near the community of Gull Bay.

Gregorchuk and Lindstrom were in court Nov. 12 and both had their matters adjourned to Jan. 12.

• Jessie Patrick George, 21. He‘s charged with second-degree murder following the death of Joseph Kakeway. The 19-year-old Kakeway died April 25 in hospital, 10 days after being found beaten and unconscious in a south-side alley.

George was in court Nov. 17 and his charges will be dealt with on Jan. 11.

• Andre Theodore Wareham, 32. He‘s charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 14 death of William Harvey Atkins. Atkins, 29, was found in the south-side apartment building where they both lived, suffering from multiple stab wounds. He died in hospital.

Wareham‘s matter is on the Superior Court docket for a jury trial. It‘s set for two weeks, beginning Feb. 1.

• Harold Earl Barr, 49. He‘s charged with second-degree murder in the death of Robert Alexander Good on Aug. 4. Good, 49, died of a stab wound to the chest at his Edward Street apartment.

Barr‘s next appearance in court is Dec. 9.

• Leif James Palmer Hobson, 20. He‘s charged with first-degree murder, as well as indignity to human remains, robbery and arson, in connection with the mysterious disappearance and death of Edgar Marion.

The 65-year-old Marion‘s body was found July 10 inside the burnt hulk of his 1988 Chevy Caprice Classic sedan, which was discovered by cyclists in a wooded area between Balsam Street and Hodder Avenue.

Hobson made a short court appearance Thursday. He‘s due back in court Dec. 18.
