Yet, dozens of Fort Frances residents are preparing to do just that on New Year‘s Day for the annual Polar Plunge sponsored by the Voyageur Lions Club. Organizers said Tuesday that they hope this year‘s icy dip is another frosty fundraising success. The plunge starts at 1 p.m. near the government dock behind La Place Rendez-Vous. After collecting pledges, jumpers take the plunge on their own, or as part of a group. Voyageur Lions Club member Dale Gill has been jumping into Rainy Lake‘s frigid waters every year since the club began sponsoring the event 10 years ago. With no plunge in 2002, Gill has braved frostite and other bodily shrinkage for local charity nine times. He said the sub-zero dip “is quite refreshing.” While every participant receives a Polar Plunge T-shirt, other prizes are up for grabs, including best costume prizes and a $500 bonus for the group that raises the most money. About $14,000 was raised during last year‘s plunge. The Voyageur Lions Club‘s focus is on helping children and youth. It is currently fundraising for vision-assisted equipment for the new Fort Frances Public Library and Technology Centre. Top of Page |
