A 30-year-old and a 20-year-old are both charged with breaking and entering and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The 20-year-old man was also charged with breach of probation. Officers interviewed two females and a male on Monday after a vehicle was used to crash through the Beer Store window. A five-hour standoff resulted in those three being picked up by police, although none of them was charged. They were released unconditionally. “When the smoke cleared and we completed the investigation, that‘s what we were left with (the two men who were arrested Monday afternoon),” Det. Bill Wowchuck said Tuesday. Two vehicles were stolen early Monday morning, police said. They believe a pickup truck was taken from Crown Street and a 1989 Jeep Cherokee from nearby Summit Avenue. “The pickup may have broken down on them and then they needed another vehicle,” Wowchuck said. Police believe the Jeep was used to drive through the Beer Store window just after 2:30 a.m. Monday. Between five and 10 cases of beer were taken, a Beer Store representative told The Chronicle-Journal on Monday. The heavily damaged Jeep was found a short time later at 346 John St., where police blocked off the area after discovering hunting ammo. “We couldn‘t confirm that” weapons were involved, Wowchuck said. “We found ammunition that could be used in a hunting rifle.” Police said it is believed one of the men charged Tuesday entered the home and escaped a short time later. “A second male allegedly ran from the vehicle when police arrived on scene,” police said. Police are still investigating whether the LCBO break-in last week is connected to Beer Store incident. Officers believe a stolen pickup truck was used to smash through the Villa Street LCBO store window on Dec. 22, when four 60-ouncers of rum were taken. “Certainly you can suspect that they‘re related, so we‘re happy we‘ve got two people charged for this most recent crime,” Wowchuck said. A similar incident occurred at the Intercity LCBO outlet last year. Top of Page |
