The group of 10 from Agnew H. Johnson school was awarded $400 through a Lakehead District School Board contest, and used the money to provide a meal in the Shelter House‘s soup kitchen on Monday. They‘ll do lunch again one day next month. “They wanted students to come up with a proposal,” teacher Megan Harri said of the school board contest. “They would then receive $200 that they would have to use to show their character education through doing things within the community.” Character education, Harri said, involves activities that teach empathy, honesty, respect, responsibility and integrity. Some of the school‘s Grade 8 students approached Harri with their Shelter House idea, and wrote up a proposal. The school board liked it enough to award them $400. Using that, the students came up with a menu, did some shopping, and prepared a meal that included chili, mashed potatoes, salad, and dessert. “We just wanted to help out the community and have fun at the same time,” student Alanna Rankin, 13, said after the class had finished preparing for the lunch service. “It‘s going great,” added classmate Erik Bentz, also 13. “It‘s good to help out.” Shelter House executive director Cal Rankin called the students‘ efforts “awesome.” “I think it‘s truly educational,” he said. “I‘m hoping that some of these kids will come back and do more hours for us. “Several Lakehead schools now are participating in our kitchen program,” he added. “It‘s really about the education benefit. I think it‘s huge the teachers recognize that.” The Agnew H. Johnson students are to serve another lunch at Shelter House on March 8. Top of Page |
