Leg irons escapee‘s undoing

It‘s not unusual for Karl Glad to occasionally catch a glimpse of a prisoner in leg irons and standard bright orange overalls.

Glad‘s house is a stone‘s throw from Schreiber‘s provincial police detachment, where prisoners often stop for a washroom break during supervised custody transfers on the Trans-Canada Highway.

But around mid-morning Tuesday, Glad did see something unusual when he went into his garage to throw another stick of wood into the stove.

A man whom Glad took for a prisoner was standing there, in the process of covering himself with one of Glad‘s old jackets.

“He said he just came in to get warm, but I told him he had better get out of there,” Glad recalled later Tuesday.

Glad, who notified police when the man left, said there was no doubt in his mind that the man was an escapee.

“I saw the leg irons, which had been cut, so I put two and two together.”

At the same time that Glad had made his surprising discovery, OPP cruisers were zipping up and down Schreiber streets looking for a 29-year-old southern Ontario man who had escaped from a Correctional Services detail about 30 minutes earlier, police said in a news release.

The at-large man was apprehended shortly after his encounter with Glad. The accused was charged with resisting arrest and escaping from lawful custody, police said.

“They had to chase him down and tackle him,” said Glad.

Police said the escapee wasn‘t a threat to public safety.

“He is serving a six-month sentence, but not for something that we would consider a public-safety issue,” Nipigon OPP Staff Sgt. Brent Anderson said.

Glad said he can‘t understand how someone could get away from correctional service staff while wearing leg irons.

“All you would be able to do is shuffle,” he said.

Other locals said the prisoner was spotted moving away from the detachment by people at a restaurant across the highway, who began shouting that someone was escaping.

Glad believes the man managed to break the irons with an axe in his garage.

“It sure makes you think twice about leaving your doors open,” he remarked.

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services said it was still investigating the escape.
