Love of bodybuilding lifts McNaughton to the top

Staying fit has always been fun for Sarah McNaughton. Now, the Thunder Bay native has decided to take it to the next level.

The 28-year-old Confederation College graduate is living in Toronto, working as a dental assistant and focusing on turning one of her biggest passions, bodybuilding, into more than just a hobby.

In November, she took home the top female prize in the figure category at the 2009 UFE (Ultimate Fitness Events) National Championship, held in Toronto.

In the category, women are judged on their overall athletic appearance, muscle development, grooming, portion and symmetry, skin condition and tone, and overall presentation.

“I actually didn‘t think I was going to do well,” she said in an interview. “I was shocked and floored. I thought all the women there looked better than me.”

Along with a trophy and bragging rights, McNaughton won a photo shoot with Hollywood photographer and make-up artist Korby Banner.

The win was such a shock partly because it was the first competition she had ever entered and also because she hadn‘t trained for as long as most of the other contenders, she said.

Although she has been serious about working out since she was a teenager – when her parents Dave and Nancy McNaughton bought their family gym passes to Confederation College – she said the dieting that comes along with competing is tough.

“It was so emotional. It is so hard dieting. I‘d say it was one of the hardest things I‘ve done in my life,” she said.

For nine weeks before the competition, McNaughton cut out all milk products, nuts and fruits, and focused on watching her carbohydrate and protein intakes.

“I was eating so much chicken. I was definitely getting sick of it,” she said with a laugh.

Most of her nutrition and workout advice came from bodybuilder Marc St. Pierre, who trains people from his website goalstrainingonline.com.

“You have to have a trainer if you‘re going to do this kind of thing,” she said.

The right combination of supplements and multivitamins is also important when training for a show, which can get expensive.

“These competitions can be hard on your bank account,” she said, adding that she is looking for a sponsor to help with some of the costs for her next competition, an Ontario Physique Association event being held in Stratford in April.

The dieting and training for that event has begun and McNaughton is anxious to see how she does in her second competition.

“I‘d love to be the next Monica Brant (a famous female fitness competitor and fitness magazine cover girl), but right now I have to take it one competition at a time,” she said.

Whatever happens, she said she is happy with where her dreams have taken her so far.

“People have always asked me why I train so hard and my only answer is that I love it,” she said.
