The Regional Food Distribution Association has Thunder Bay city council‘s full support to purchase a building described as “the cat‘s meow.”

During Monday night‘s meeting, councillors unanimously voted to release the $330,000 already in the 2010 budget to purchase the former bingo hall at 570 S. Syndicate Ave.

The 15,000-square-foot building, which is also a former grocery store, will allow food to be stacked three pallets high, plus it will have a commercial kitchen.

The kitchen will give food bank workers the ability to create soups and other items to be frozen then sent to other agencies, using food nearing the end of its life.

“This investment is very important for people needing assistance,” RFDA president Larry Brigham said Monday after the announcement.

“This (building) is the cat‘s meow as far as I‘m concerned. If the shoe fits you can say it‘s comfortable and it‘s going to be comfortable for us.”

The announcement marks the end of a two-year search to solve the space problem the RFDA has in its current McKenzie street location, which is now for sale.

The RFDA serves as a food distribution centre for area food banks.

It provides support to nine food banks in the city and seven in the region, four feeding programs and seven specialized agencies.

“I‘m quite excited about this,‘‘ said Brigham. “It‘s post-Olympic time and I‘d say the city has won a gold medal with this.”

He said the RFDA hopes to take possession of the building this month and move in within a few months.

A loading dock and improved insulation are on the to-do list, Brigham said.
